Earth Photo 2025
Established in 2018, Earth Photo is a world leading international programme focussed on the prescient issues affecting our planet, our environment and the impact of climate change. Two of my images were shortlisted and shown at the Royal Geographical Society, London, and exhibited on a national tour to Forestry England sites, Moors Valley Country Park and Forest , Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest, Dalby Forest, Haldon Forest Park, Fineshade Wood, Grizedale Forest, Sidney Nolan Trust, Herefordshire, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Cornwall.

Fulufhelo Brenda Khobo, a meteorological technician from the South African Weather Service (SAWS), prepares to launch a weather balloon on Gough Island — a remote outpost in the South Atlantic Ocean and part of Tristan da Cunha, the world’s most remote inhabited archipelago.
Brenda spent a year on Gough as part of the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP), collecting critical upper-air data on temperature, pressure, and humidity. Her work contributes to a decades-long legacy of atmospheric research from this isolated island, which plays a vital but little-known role in understanding global weather systems.
Stations like the one on Gough are rare — remote, rugged, and essential. They provide Cape Town with real-time data for maritime weather forecasting, support long-term climate modelling, and contribute to the safety of ships navigating the storm-prone South Atlantic. The data collected here is also fed into global systems that help improve weather prediction far beyond the island’s wild shores.

An Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatross (Thalassarche Chlororhynchos) tends to its chick at First Pond on Nightingale Island — a volcanic outcrop in the Tristan da Cunha archipelago, the world’s most remote inhabited island group, located deep in the South Atlantic Ocean.
These birds are endemic to Tristan da Cunha and breed nowhere else on Earth. While their foraging range spans an astonishing 16.8 million square kilometres, their breeding grounds are vanishingly small: just 80 square kilometres across a handful of protected islands. The contrast is striking — a vast, oceanic life anchored to a few patches of wind-swept tussock and rock.
Nightingale, one of the smaller islands in the Tristan group, plays a vital role in global seabird conservation. Its isolation has helped protect the albatross from many mainland threats, but their populations remain under pressure from longline fishing bycatch, plastic ingestion, and climate disruption.
